Sonos is introducing another major app overhaul, this time under the name Sonos 27, with optional generative AI controls and tools for diagnosing speaker connections. The release follows the company's troubled 2024 redesign, which removed useful features and contributed to a leadership change.
An early-access feature called Sonos 27voice lets users request music conversationally, including by mood. Model Context Protocol support can connect the system to an outside assistant such as ChatGPT, while customizable agents can trigger speakers in particular rooms or at scheduled times. Sonos also plans improved navigation, room sorting and volume controls, with system-health views due in the fall.
The software will run through the newer S2 app, not the S1 app used by some older equipment. Sonos says newer hardware capabilities mean not every product will support every feature, but detailed compatibility and upgrade paths will come later. The AI functions are opt-in. Alongside the software, Sonos announced Ace Ultra headphones that can move audio between headphones and speakers, and a Beam Ultra soundbar with AI-based speech enhancement.
