Some shared Claude conversations appeared in Google and Bing search results over the weekend, exposing a privacy gap around AI chatbot sharing links. WIRED reports that indexed chats included sensitive or personal topics, even though Anthropic had told crawlers not to index shared Claude URLs.

Claude lets users create public snapshots of conversations through share links. Anthropic’s robots.txt file has made those shared chats off limits to web crawlers, but robots.txt is only a request to crawlers, not a complete privacy control. Search engines may also require page-level noindex tags to reliably keep URLs out of search results.

The incident is a reminder that “shared” does not always mean “private to people who have the link.” AI products increasingly turn conversations into web pages, and those pages interact with the same indexing systems as the rest of the web. For users, the safe assumption is simple: do not put sensitive material in a shareable chatbot link unless it is acceptable for that page to become public.
