Verizon is trying to turn AI infrastructure demand into a new telecom revenue stream. The company disclosed a deal worth more than $1 billion to connect Google data centers using Verizon dark fiber routes, and says it expects more AI-related deals in the coming years.
The initiative, called AI Connect, is built around two needs created by AI growth. Hyperscalers need high-capacity links between data centers, while some inference workloads may need lower latency near users, robots, vehicles, or industrial systems. Verizon says it is also retrofitting some central offices into small data centers for edge inference.
The plan shows how AI spending is spreading beyond chips and cloud servers into networks, real estate, and edge infrastructure. Verizon says a small trial of the central-office conversion sold out quickly, though the broader business still has to prove demand at scale. If it works, telecom assets that once carried voice and internet traffic could become part of the AI compute supply chain.
