Runway is turning model choice into a developer service for generative media. The company has launched Runway Media Router through Runway Dev, its API platform for image, video, and audio generation models.

The router automatically selects a model for each request based on whether a developer prioritizes quality, speed, or cost. Model routers are already common around large language models, but Runway says this version is built specifically for media generation, where output type, style, latency, and price can vary sharply between models.

The launch matters because generative media is becoming crowded. Developers building creative tools may not want to benchmark every new video, image, or audio model themselves. Runway wants to be the layer that gives them access to many models while hiding some of that selection complexity.

Customers using Runway Dev include Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora. The business shift is clear: Runway still builds models, but it also wants to be the infrastructure that routes demand across the broader media-model market.
