Mistral has released a preview of Mistral Large 4, a one-trillion-parameter model nicknamed “Le Chonk,” with weights that organizations can download and customize. A final release is planned for the end of October.
The French company is positioning the model as an alternative to leading proprietary systems from US companies and open-weight releases from China. It emphasizes coding, cyberdefense and specialist work in manufacturing, finance and electrical engineering. Mistral says it trained the model from scratch and claims its performance is close to top closed models, but those comparisons are the company’s assessment and require independent testing.
Open weights give businesses more control over deployment, fine-tuning and data handling, although operating a model of this size requires substantial computing infrastructure. Mistral argues that customers then pay primarily for the compute they use instead of per-token access to a closed service. The preview lets developers begin evaluating that tradeoff now. Until the final model and broader third-party results arrive, Le Chonk’s strongest claims should be treated as provisional rather than established performance rankings.
