A US Defense Department procurement program is using product videos capped at five minutes to evaluate AI tools for a faster purchasing channel. Vendors submit against defined strategic areas, and a panel reviews entries at least monthly for admission to the Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace.

Accepted products receive a “post-competitive” designation. That can satisfy competition requirements for government buyers and shorten a process that normally takes months. A Defense Department official told WIRED that some awards made through Tradewinds took less than a week. OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are listed among participating companies.

Tradewinds has operated since late 2022, but it is gaining importance as the Pentagon pushes to put more AI into military workflows. The streamlined route broadens access for contractors that do not normally sell to the government, yet it also concentrates substantial screening weight in a brief recorded pitch. Entry to the marketplace is not itself a contract, and individual agencies still choose what to buy. The program’s real test is whether faster acquisition preserves enough technical, security and operational scrutiny for systems used in sensitive defense settings.
