Microsoft is removing Mico, the expressive yellow avatar that appeared in Copilot's voice mode, less than a year after introducing it. The Verge reports that Microsoft now plans to move Mico to its Learn Live platform, where the company says the character will have more to react to.
Mico was introduced as a way to give Copilot more of an identity during spoken interactions. It reacted to users in real time with facial expressions and animations, echoing Microsoft's long history of virtual helpers such as Clippy and Cortana.
The retreat shows how uncertain the right interface for consumer AI assistants still is. Companies want assistants to feel more personal, but characters can also distract users, feel gimmicky, or fail to justify their place in a practical workflow.
The timing also fits a broader Copilot reshuffle. Microsoft is merging its Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps and has recently killed or reorganized other AI features. Mico's removal is small on its own, but it signals that AI assistant branding and product surfaces are still being tested in public.
