Google Home is adding a Model Context Protocol connection that lets third-party AI agents monitor and control compatible smart-home devices. Agents including Claude and other MCP clients can use device state and event history, enabling tasks such as comparing camera events, checking how long lights stayed on or building a custom control dashboard.
The integration does not replace Gemini for Home on Nest speakers or in the Home app. Instead, it creates a separate route through which an outside agent can act on the same household system. Agents can also send voice messages through Google Home speakers when they finish a task. Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is a standard interface that lets AI software connect to tools and data sources.
Access will initially roll out over the coming weeks to US customers on Google Home Premium Advanced, priced at $20 per month or $200 per year. Setup requires creating and configuring a Google Cloud project, so this is not yet a simple consumer toggle. Giving an outside agent access to cameras, locks, thermostats and appliance history creates material privacy and safety risks. Google says the connection is secure, but users will need clear permission controls, audit records and cautious agent configuration before delegating actions that affect a physical home.
