Germany has put Google AI Overviews and Perplexity under media law in a first-of-its-kind ruling, The Decoder reports. The decision treats AI answer products as services that may carry media-style responsibilities.
The ruling matters because AI answer engines increasingly summarize, select, and present information in ways that resemble editorial products. Regulators are now testing which existing legal categories apply to them.
If similar interpretations spread, AI search providers may face new obligations around transparency, accountability, and how they handle publisher content.
