Cloudflare is arguing for an “Agentic Internet” built around open standards that let AI agents read, discover, call, and pay across the web. The company says current web infrastructure was built for humans, while a growing share of traffic now comes from software acting on a person’s behalf.
That mismatch creates waste and conflict. Bots repeatedly fetch pages that have not changed, site owners cannot tell which agents are useful, and businesses risk treating potential customers as scrapers. Cloudflare frames the next phase of the web as a choice between a few closed stacks controlling identity, discovery, and payments, or open rails that any site can implement.
The company points to standards such as x402, MCP, Web Bot Auth, and PACT as pieces of that system. Domain owners should be able to choose their own identity providers, payment processors, and agent partners.
The vision is ambitious and self-interested, but the problem is real. If agents become routine web visitors, sites need ways to verify them, expose actions safely, and get paid when automated work creates value.
