Anthropic says its Claude models can coordinate a full protein-design workflow by steering existing specialized tools, according to The Decoder.
The company tested the approach on small proteins that dock onto target structures in the body, an early step in drug development. Anthropic reported hit rates up to 35 percent, compared with an industry average of 10 to 15 percent cited in the article.
The distinction matters: Claude was not replacing the scientific toolchain with a chatbot answer. It acted as an agent directing established tools across the workflow. That is closer to how AI may enter complex research labs, where orchestration and iteration can be as valuable as a single prediction.
The limitation is equally important. The report says independent review is still pending, and early protein-design hits are not the same as validated drugs. The result is a promising workflow claim, not proof that language-model agents can automate biomedical discovery end to end.
