Meta is allowing AI coding agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging through a new Model Context Protocol server. Developers can describe what they need in chat while an agent handles steps that previously required moving among Meta’s Developer Console, Business Manager, API documentation and a code editor.
The WhatsApp Business Tools MCP can create a business account, add and verify a phone number, register it for the Cloud API and check requirements such as terms acceptance, payment methods and business verification. Supported agents include Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT. They can also create or edit message templates, test messages and webhooks, and surface configuration failures. Meta’s separate Social Technologies MCP remains available for searching documentation and troubleshooting other APIs.
MCP is a standard interface for connecting AI agents to external tools. Here it changes onboarding rather than the customer-facing WhatsApp experience. Automating administrative steps could save time, but account creation, phone verification and payment configuration are consequential actions. Businesses should inspect the agent’s proposed changes, restrict permissions and retain an audit trail instead of treating the chat interface as proof that every requirement was handled correctly. The release expands Meta’s use of MCP beyond advertising and app monitoring into a widely used business-messaging platform.
