Microsoft published a look at its two-decade effort to reduce water intensity while scaling datacenter infrastructure. The company says water stewardship has been a priority since its early datacenter builds and is becoming more visible as AI and cloud demand grow.
The topic matters because AI infrastructure is increasingly judged not only by compute capacity, but also by its local resource impact. Communities want clearer answers about water use, power needs, and sustainability tradeoffs.
Microsoft’s post positions efficiency work as part of the cost of scaling AI responsibly, rather than a separate environmental program.
