Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs have signed a multiyear licensing agreement to build an AI music platform around Universal’s catalog. The planned service will let users create remixes, mashups and other versions of licensed tracks rather than relying on unlicensed training material or uploads.

Participation will be optional for artists. The companies say the project will combine Universal’s rights-management system with ElevenLabs’ generation technology and compensate participating artists and songwriters. They have not yet detailed the payment structure, launch date, catalog size or rules governing what users may publish.

The platform will operate separately from ElevenLabs’ existing Music API and ElevenMusic generator. The partnership also covers additional products and fan experiences, but the announcement provides no specifics about those projects.

Universal is pursuing several AI arrangements at once, including a platform with Udio and licensing deals with Spotify, Nvidia and Klay. Warner Music and other industry partners have also licensed material for Suno’s latest model. The ElevenLabs project therefore adds to a broader shift toward negotiated music-AI products, while leaving important questions about pricing, creative control and revenue sharing for a later announcement.
