Superpose, an iOS camera app from two former TikTok employees, uses generative AI to suggest how a person could pose for a portrait. A user takes a selfie or photographs a friend, receives four generated options, then can save one or match it in the live frame.
The startup is deliberately focusing on guidance for photographs taken in the real world rather than generating fantasy backgrounds or replacing the final image. Co-founder Melody Chu previously held product roles at Meta, Nextdoor, Roblox, TikTok and Slack. Co-founder Jing Liu worked on 3D face scanning and later on TikTok’s image and video models.
Since launching in July, Superpose has been downloaded more than 22,000 times and users have generated over 190,000 poses, according to the company. The app includes five generations per day at no charge. Extra packs cost $2.99 for five or $9.99 for 20.
Some suggestions can look uncanny, a limitation Chu acknowledged. The team is working on generation styles, personalization and more direct coaching through the viewfinder. Superpose has raised $2.2 million from Khosla Ventures, Meitu and OVTR VC.
