Spotify is introducing labels for “AI Persona” artist profiles and will exclude their music from several recommendation surfaces by default. TechCrunch reports that the label applies to profiles representing AI-generated identities rather than real people.
The move addresses a trust problem in music streaming. Listeners may not object to AI-generated music in every context, but they need to know whether a profile represents a human artist, a fictional persona, or an automated output channel. Recommendations also shape attention and revenue, so pushing synthetic profiles alongside human artists can quickly become a fairness issue.
Spotify’s approach does not ban AI music. It creates a disclosure category and changes default distribution through editorial, algorithmic, and personalized recommendations. That gives the platform room to host synthetic content while reducing the chance that it quietly crowds out real artists. The policy’s impact will depend on accurate disclosure, enforcement, and whether creators try to evade the label to regain recommendation reach.
