Smallest.ai has raised $13 million in Series A funding to build voice agents that sound more like human callers, TechCrunch reports. The round was led by Seligman Ventures with participation from Sierra Ventures and 3one4 Capital, bringing the startup’s total funding to more than $21 million.

The company is focused on the conversational layer of AI agents. Rather than relying only on faster large language models, Smallest.ai says it is building smaller specialized voice models that can listen, think and speak in a more human rhythm.

That distinction matters in customer support and phone-based sales, where people can often tell immediately when a system is waiting for a full prompt before responding. A model that can handle interruptions and overlapping conversational cues may feel less robotic.

The startup’s claim is ambitious: it wants AI phone calls to become difficult to distinguish from human conversations. The hard parts will be reliability, disclosure, consent and handling messy real-world calls, not just producing a convincing voice in a demo.
