Apple’s redesigned Siri AI can search personal messages and photos far more effectively than the older assistant, according to a month-long test of the iOS 27 developer beta. The chatbot-style interface also turns Siri into a more useful general search bar for the iPhone.

The test found that those improvements did not automatically make the assistant central to daily phone use. Familiar habits such as opening social and local-search apps returned, while an existing preference for another chatbot reduced the incentive to switch. That distinction matters for Apple: better retrieval and a cleaner interface can remove friction without persuading experienced users to delegate more tasks.

Apple may not need every power user to change behavior. Analysts cited by WIRED argue that mainstream customers often rely on software installed by default, giving Siri a distribution advantage even when rival assistants are stronger in some tasks. Personal context stored on the phone and Apple’s privacy positioning could make that default especially useful for finding a forgotten conversation or image.

The experience comes from beta software and one reviewer, not a controlled comparison. Reliability, supported devices and final features may change before release. For now, the practical gain appears to be faster access to information already on an iPhone rather than a wholesale replacement for apps and manual navigation.
