Shows open-model growth is broad but highly uneven

Hugging Face’s summer 2026 review shows an open-model ecosystem that is growing quickly but remains sharply concentrated.

The company says public model repositories on the Hub grew from 2.43 million to 2.96 million between January and August 2026. Public datasets rose from 711,000 to 1 million, while Spaces grew from 1.00 million to 1.44 million. Under that expansion, usage is still highly uneven: about 85.6 percent of models have fewer than 200 lifetime downloads, and 1.5 percent of repositories account for 99.2 percent of downloads.

That split matters because repository counts alone can overstate how distributed the open AI ecosystem really is. More people are publishing models and datasets, but attention and real-world adoption remain concentrated around a small set of projects.

The report also notes a faster frontier among open releases, including large Chinese models that skip the gradual size progression earlier labs followed. For builders, the takeaway is that open options are expanding, but choosing a model still requires careful evidence about adoption, maintenance, and fit.
