Shopify is extending WebMCP support from product search and carts into checkout, allowing browser-based AI agents to complete purchases after a buyer authorizes the transaction. The feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants and includes Shop Pay.

Three structured tools support the workflow. An agent can retrieve checkout details, update fields such as an address or delivery option, and submit the order. Because the tools expose checkout functions directly, agents do not need to interpret screenshots or scrape pages built for people. Shopify says required disclosures and handoff rules are carried through its Universal Commerce Protocol.

WebMCP is intended for agents running in the buyer’s browser, while Shopify also offers a hosted Model Context Protocol server for server-to-server connections. Authorization at the final step is an important boundary, but merchants and buyers will still need clear records of what an agent changed before submission. The update makes agent purchasing technically easier without making every automated choice safe or desirable.
