Reddit is introducing automated moderation tools that use large language models to help community moderators manage rules, The Verge reports. The tools are starting with new subreddits and are planned for broader availability later this year.
Moderation is one of Reddit’s hardest operational problems because every community has its own norms and rule language. LLMs could help interpret or draft rules, classify posts, and reduce repetitive work for volunteer moderators.
The rollout also shows how social platforms are using AI inside governance workflows, not only in user-facing search or content generation. If the tools work, they could make it easier to launch and maintain communities.
The risk is judgment. Automated systems can misunderstand context, sarcasm, or local norms, so Reddit will need clear controls and human oversight to avoid turning moderation help into moderation drift.
