Reddit CEO Steve Huffman used the company’s latest earnings discussion to criticize Google’s AI Overviews, arguing that AI summaries have not yet produced the same mutual value as traditional search links.
Huffman said Reddit offers human context, opinion, and lived experience at a time when the web is filling with synthetic content. His argument is also commercial: Reddit has a reported $60 million licensing deal with Google, and The Wall Street Journal has reported that Reddit has considered ending it. Reddit also has a separate deal with OpenAI.
The dispute reflects a broader publisher concern. AI Overviews can answer questions directly on Google’s results page, which may reduce visits to the sites that supplied the underlying information. A Pew Research study found lower referral rates when AI Overviews appeared, while Google has disputed that such studies represent overall search traffic.
For Reddit and other publishers, the practical question is whether licensing fees and search exposure can offset fewer clicks. Huffman’s comments suggest that answer is still unsettled.
