Major record labels are pushing for chart rules that would keep fully AI-generated songs from qualifying for official rankings. The proposal reported by The Verge includes Universal Music Group, Sony Music and Warner Music Group.
The idea goes beyond simply labeling AI music. If adopted, it would affect whether synthetic tracks can compete for visibility in the same chart systems used to measure mainstream popularity. That makes the proposal a business issue as much as a disclosure issue.
Music charts influence promotion, licensing conversations and public perception. Labels argue that charts should reflect human artists and commercially released recordings rather than automated output designed to exploit recommendation systems or fan confusion.
The proposal does not settle the larger question of how much AI assistance is acceptable in music production. Many songs already use software-heavy workflows, and future rules would need to distinguish between AI as a tool and AI as the primary creator. The immediate consequence is that the industry is moving from warning labels toward eligibility limits.
