Volunteer AR scans from Pokémon Go players helped train Niantic’s spatial AI models, according to The Decoder. That technology is now being combined with software from a U.S. defense contractor for GPS-free navigation.

The story shows how consumer-generated spatial data can move into very different downstream contexts once a platform’s AI assets become valuable. What began as game and mapping data can later support navigation systems with defense applications.

It adds to the privacy and consent debate around AI training data, especially when users may not expect entertainment data to feed military-linked systems years later.
