Enterprise AI adoption is running into an old engineering problem: teams need reliable platforms before automation can produce durable value.
InfoQ summarizes Perforce Software’s 2026 Platform Engineering Report, which surveyed 820 technology professionals. The report found that 73 percent of organizations classified as having mature platform-engineering practices said platform maturity was a critical or significant factor in AI success, compared with 44 percent among less mature organizations.
The same survey found that 66 percent of organizations already use AI in infrastructure workflows, while only 31 percent report fully autonomous AI. That gap suggests most companies are still trying to move from experiments toward governed production use.
The useful caution is that the survey shows correlation, not proof that platform maturity causes AI success. Still, the pattern matches a broader lesson from AI operations: agents and assistants amplify the systems around them. Standard workflows, policy enforcement, audit trails and developer platforms can make AI more useful, while weak foundations turn faster automation into faster confusion.
