TechCrunch examined skepticism around Elon Musk’s idea of orbital data centers, noting that SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son is not the only person questioning the concept.
The idea is tied to a real AI infrastructure problem: demand for compute, power, and cooling keeps climbing. But moving datacenters into orbit would introduce extreme constraints around launch cost, maintenance, networking latency, radiation, and replacement cycles.
The pushback is a useful counterweight to AI infrastructure hype. More compute will be needed, but the most dramatic proposals still have to survive engineering and economic reality.
