OpenRouter has launched a US regional endpoint designed to keep an AI request inside the United States from decryption through inference. Developers can switch their base URL to us.openrouter.ai without changing API keys, request bodies or model IDs. An existing EU endpoint provides the same arrangement within the European Union.
Only providers operating in the selected region can handle the traffic. If no regional provider supports a requested model, OpenRouter returns an error instead of silently sending the job elsewhere. Tools that would move data outside the region are also disabled. Teams can enforce one region for a workspace, team or API key through guardrails.
The regional catalog is smaller than OpenRouter’s global selection, though it includes models from several US, European and Chinese labs when a local provider hosts them. OpenRouter says the original model developer is not involved when an open-weight model runs through another provider. In-Region Routing is available now on Business and Enterprise plans, so customers on other tiers cannot use the residency guarantee.
