OpenAI released research on how AI is expanding what people do at work, based on patterns it says it sees among ChatGPT users. The central claim is that people are using AI across role boundaries, taking on tasks that previously may have required different skills or departments.
That matters because the workplace impact of AI may come less from replacing entire jobs at once and more from redistributing smaller tasks. Writing, analysis, planning, coding help, and customer-facing preparation can move between employees when a general-purpose assistant lowers the barrier to entry.
The findings come from OpenAI’s own research and should be weighed with that context. They do not settle which jobs will grow or shrink, but they give a concrete way to think about adoption: AI changes the menu of tasks people can attempt.
