OpenAI has begun testing ads in ChatGPT as a way to support free access to the service. The company says the ads will be clearly labeled and that ChatGPT’s answers will remain independent from advertising placement.

The test is important because it introduces a familiar internet business model into a conversational product where trust is unusually sensitive. Users may accept ads in search results or social feeds, but a chatbot’s value depends on believing that its responses are shaped by relevance and accuracy rather than sponsorship.

OpenAI says the test includes privacy protections and user controls, but the details will determine how people react. Ad targeting, disclosure, placement, and separation from generated answers will all matter. If the format works, it could help subsidize free usage without putting every feature behind a subscription. If it feels intrusive or affects perceived neutrality, it could weaken one of ChatGPT’s core advantages: the expectation that the assistant is answering the user, not steering them toward an advertiser.
