OpenAI’s first hardware device with former Apple designer Jony Ive is reportedly taking shape as a screenless smart speaker rather than a phone, tablet, or wearable.
The Verge, citing Bloomberg reporting, says the device is battery-powered, roughly hockey-puck sized, and expected in 2027 at a price above $300. It is described as a doughnut-shaped product with microphones, a camera, and moving parts, built around ChatGPT-style interaction rather than a display.
The details matter because OpenAI has been unusually vague about its hardware ambitions. A screenless speaker would put the company closer to ambient assistants than to traditional computing devices, where the central challenge is whether users trust an AI system enough to leave it listening, watching, and acting in the home.
