OpenAI is introducing Presence, an enterprise offering meant to make AI agents usable in production business settings, according to The Decoder. The focus is customer-service and internal workflow deployments where reliability matters more than a demo.
The company already offers Workspace Agents, customizable GPT-style assistants that are mostly aimed at internal use. Presence appears to go further by pairing agent tooling with deployment help, including support from OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineers when a use case needs more than the default setup.
That difference matters because many agent projects fail at the messy edges: permissions, handoffs, monitoring, exception handling, and integration with existing systems. A chatbot can answer a question; a production agent may need to take action inside business software while staying auditable and safe.
The announcement does not prove that agents are ready for every workflow. It does show OpenAI moving from selling model access toward implementation-heavy enterprise products, where the main challenge is making agents dependable enough for real operations.
