OpenAI has hired three former Patreon executives to form the core of a new product group for creators. Patreon cofounder and longtime technology chief Sam Yam will lead Creator Product, joined by former product head Drew Rowny and former engineering head Shannon Ma.
Yam said the team plans to develop tools with creators and offer early access to products intended for creators and their communities. He pointed followers toward OpenAI DevDay on September 29 and another company announcement expected sooner, but neither he nor OpenAI described a product, launch date or business model.
The move gives OpenAI executives who helped build one of the most established creator-subscription platforms. That experience could support tools for production, audience relationships or monetization, but the hiring alone does not confirm that OpenAI will launch a Patreon competitor. Any such conclusion remains speculation until the company reveals what the group is making.
For Patreon, the departures follow a difficult year. The company laid off 20% of its staff in January and recently published a broad roadmap for updating its service. Losing its cofounder plus former product and engineering leaders gives OpenAI a ready-made team while increasing the execution challenge facing their previous employer.
