OpenAI is giving free ChatGPT users unlimited text chats, according to The Verge. The change comes alongside updates to ChatGPT’s model lineup, including improvements to GPT-5.6 Sol for paid users and a new default model for free users.

For Plus and Pro subscribers, OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol should be more reliable with facts and more focused in everyday answers. The company is also adding controls that let users choose how much reasoning effort ChatGPT applies to harder questions.

For free users, the headline change is access. Unlimited text chats lower the friction for people who use ChatGPT for quick questions, planning, writing, research, and everyday assistance. OpenAI says free users will also be able to tap higher reasoning for harder prompts through a Think button.

The move reflects a maturing consumer AI market. Basic conversational access is becoming less scarce, while paid tiers increasingly have to justify themselves through reliability, reasoning controls, speed, and access to more capable features.
