OpenAI is partnering with the American Psychological Association to shape guidance on how young people use AI, especially when mental health, family support, and school counseling are involved. The work is meant to bring psychological science into product safeguards and public resources rather than treating teen AI use as only a technology problem.
The companies say the effort will include family-facing materials for parents and caregivers, resources for clinicians and school psychologists, and continued discussions with researchers, educators, youth representatives, and advocacy groups. One focus is helping adults recognize healthy use, overreliance, and moments when human intervention is needed.
OpenAI frames the partnership as a way to support, not replace, real relationships and care. That distinction matters because young people already ask AI systems for advice, explanations, and emotional support, while evidence about the benefits and risks is still developing.
The announcement does not introduce a specific product change. Its near-term value will depend on whether the resulting guidance is concrete enough for families and practitioners, and whether it translates into stronger safeguards inside AI systems used by teens.
