Nvidia’s open-source AI alliance is missing OpenAI and Anthropic, according to WIRED, leaving two of the most influential model developers outside a coalition meant to promote more open AI infrastructure.
The absence matters because “open” has become a central argument in AI strategy. Some companies want broader access to model weights, tools and standards, while others keep frontier systems closed for safety, business or competitive reasons.
Nvidia has strong incentives to support a broad ecosystem. More open models and tools can drive demand for its chips, software and cloud partnerships. But an alliance without OpenAI and Anthropic cannot fully represent the companies shaping much of the frontier model market.
The split does not mean collaboration is impossible. It does show that open-source AI is not a single movement with shared priorities. Hardware companies, startups, cloud providers and safety-focused labs may all use the language of openness while pursuing different practical goals.
