Microsoft has named its developer-focused Windows configuration Project Zenith and set a hardware baseline of at least 64GB of unified memory. The company says compatible machines can run models with more than 30 billion parameters locally, giving developers an unmetered option for experiments that would otherwise consume cloud tokens.
AMD announced the first Zenith device, a small PC built around its Ryzen AI Halo chips. Microsoft says additional systems using other processors will arrive in the coming months, though it has not provided a complete schedule or pricing.
The software setup combines familiar development tools with changes intended to reduce setup work and distractions. Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI and Windows Dev Skills come installed. File Explorer displays extensions, hidden files and full paths, while long-path support is enabled. Recent-file lists, sync-provider tips, Start menu suggestions and account notifications are turned off, and the PowerToys Command Palette is active by default.
Zenith is a device configuration rather than a new Windows edition, and the 30-billion-parameter claim does not guarantee that every model or workload will run at the same speed. Performance will depend on model format, memory use and the specific processor. Its clearest benefit is a ready-made local environment for developers who want to test larger AI models without first rebuilding Windows around that workflow.
