Microsoft announced Foundry Local, a feature within the Microsoft Foundry AI platform that enables developers to prototype and test AI applications on local hardware—including laptops, edge devices, and on-premises servers—before scaling to the cloud.

The tool supports common AI development workflows including prompt engineering, model evaluation, and agent testing. Developers can iterate locally without incurring cloud compute costs, then push finished applications to Azure for production deployment.

Foundry Local addresses a key pain point for enterprise AI teams that need to test models in air-gapped or low-latency environments. It also aligns with Microsoft broader edge AI strategy, which includes AI capabilities on Windows, Azure Stack, and industrial IoT devices. The feature is available now through the Foundry SDK.
