Meta has built its own AI content detection and watermarking system, called Content Seal, but early testing suggests it may not be as strong as Google’s SynthID. The Verge reports that the system is still in its early days and is already raising questions about whether Meta should have adopted a more mature standard instead.
AI watermarking is meant to help platforms and users identify synthetic media, especially as generated images, video, and text become harder to spot by sight. Meta has faced pressure to meet its public commitments around labeling deceptive generative AI content, including criticism from its Oversight Board.
The hard part is reliability. A detector that misses altered content can give users false confidence, while one that over-labels legitimate media can create new trust problems. Watermarking also depends on adoption across tools and platforms; a private system is less useful if content moves through many services that do not preserve or recognize it.
Meta’s Content Seal may improve, but the early comparison points to a broader issue. The AI industry needs shared, durable provenance signals more than every platform needs its own incompatible badge.
