Artificial intelligence can help people find and combine biological information, but scientists interviewed by WIRED say that does not remove the hardest barriers to creating a bioweapon. Producing a dangerous pathogen still requires gene fragments, specialized equipment, practical expertise and repeated experiments to establish that it infects humans and spreads as intended.
Existing information tools already expose research protocols, and AI can accelerate that search. The larger obstacle is physical execution. Even advanced laboratory agents depend on people to supply materials and operate systems, while fully autonomous labs capable of independently building and releasing a pathogen do not exist. Experts also note that biological weapons are difficult to target and distribute compared with other means of attack.
That does not make the risk negligible. AI may help a malicious person navigate technical steps, and future automation could reduce current bottlenecks. Suggested defenses include mandatory screening of synthetic DNA and RNA orders, stronger model safeguards against actionable harmful instructions, better outbreak surveillance and data sharing among governments, AI companies and gene-synthesis providers. Each measure can be evaded, so specialists favor layers of friction from initial planning through material acquisition and release. The practical distinction is important: an autonomous AI-created plague is not the same near-term risk as a human actor using AI to assist biological work.
