Indonesia has opened a university-based AI technology center in Yogyakarta, pairing Universitas Gadjah Mada with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and NVIDIA to develop local AI talent and infrastructure.
The UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center is described as the country’s first AI center based at a university. It sits under Indonesia’s broader AI Center of Excellence effort and is meant to connect academic training with industry tools.
For students and researchers, the practical change is access to a dedicated place for AI education, experimentation and workforce development rather than a purely corporate lab. For Indosat and NVIDIA, the center also creates a channel for training developers and institutions around the compute and software stack they use.
The announcement is strongest as a capacity-building move, not a new model or product release. Its impact will depend on how widely the center’s programs reach Indonesian students, faculty and local organizations.
