IBM has unveiled a prototype chip technology with around 100 billion transistors packed into an area the size of a fingernail. MIT Technology Review reports that the design roughly doubles the density of IBM’s previous state-of-the-art technology from 2021.
The development could help extend Moore’s Law by enabling faster or more energy-efficient computers. That matters for AI because model growth and deployment economics are tightly linked to chip density and power efficiency.
The work is still a step on the road to commercial manufacturing, but it points to the hardware advances needed to keep large-scale AI affordable.
