IBM is partnering with OpenAI to bring the AI company's models and tools to more enterprise customers through IBM Consulting. TechCrunch reports that IBM will create a dedicated OpenAI practice and train and certify tens of thousands of consultants over the next several months.
The training will focus on OpenAI's Codex, API, cybersecurity, and consultative solution credentials. IBM also plans to create specialized Forward Deployed Experts through OpenAI's Partner Network and integrate OpenAI models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into IBM Consulting Advantage.
The partnership gives OpenAI another route into large organizations that often buy technology through trusted integrators rather than directly from model vendors. IBM says the two companies will jointly market offerings and develop industry-specific solutions for sectors such as financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail.
The deal also reflects where AI competition is moving. Model quality still matters, but enterprise adoption depends on consulting capacity, security review, integration work, and change management. IBM already announced a similar alliance with Anthropic, so big consultancies are becoming distribution channels for multiple frontier labs.
