Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue told TechCrunch that open source AI is booming as companies reconsider how much of their AI stack they want to rent. Hugging Face has become a major hub for sharing models and datasets, and the company says it is now used by roughly half the Fortune 500.
The argument reflects a broader enterprise concern: hosted proprietary models can be fast to adopt, but they can also create dependency, cost uncertainty, and limited control over data or customization. Open models offer a different tradeoff around ownership and operational responsibility.
For AI vendors, the trend raises the stakes around hybrid strategies that combine managed services, open weights, and tooling that lets companies move workloads where they make the most sense.
