Google has begun testing direct purchases from Walmart-owned Flipkart inside Gemini and AI Mode in India. Selected users see a Buy button on eligible product listings and can enter Flipkart's checkout flow without leaving Google's AI interface.
The trial covers a small product selection that includes smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories. Access is also limited: other users continue to see standard Flipkart listings without the purchase option. Google plans a broader rollout later in October, ahead of India's festive shopping season, according to a person familiar with the test.
The experiment turns an AI shopping answer into a transaction, increasing Google's role between a retailer and its customer. It follows the company's introduction of Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard designed to let AI agents interact with merchants through discovery and checkout. OpenAI and other competitors are pursuing similar commerce features.
A Google spokesperson confirmed that the company routinely tests ways to connect people with businesses but offered no further details. The feature remains an experiment rather than a nationwide launch, and the report does not specify payment methods, merchant fees or how purchases, returns and customer support are divided between Google and Flipkart.
