Google has launched Universal Cart for US users, creating one place to save products found through Google Search and the Gemini app. Items from different retailers remain in the cart between browsing sessions, so shoppers can compare and revisit them without repeating the search.

The service can notify a user when a saved item’s price drops or when an unavailable product returns to stock. Google says its recommendations can also account for credit-card benefits and surface relevant promotion codes when suggesting how to pay.

Checkout uses Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard Google introduced earlier this year to connect AI agents with retailers through product discovery and payment. The cart can organize goods from many stores, but completing a transaction still depends on the retailer and its support for the relevant checkout flow.

Universal Cart joins conversational product search in AI Mode and “Let Google Call,” which uses an agent to ask nearby stores whether an item is available. The launch moves Gemini from product recommendations toward maintaining shopping state and assisting with transactions. It does not make every retailer part of one marketplace, and users will still need to review seller terms, final prices and payment details before buying.
