Google is changing the top structure of its AI leadership, with Demis Hassabis becoming chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet, according to The Verge. Hassabis will also continue leading Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet’s AI-focused drug discovery company.
The move shifts one of Google’s most prominent AI figures into a broader scientific and strategic role. Koray Kavukcuoglu, a long-time DeepMind leader, is expected to take on more responsibility inside the AI organization.
Leadership changes matter because Google is trying to coordinate research, products, infrastructure, and commercial AI services across a very large company. Clearer lines of responsibility can affect how quickly models move from labs into products.
The announcement does not by itself reveal new model capabilities or release dates. Its importance is organizational: Alphabet is formalizing who steers AI research and how that work connects to wider company priorities.
