Google is narrowing model access for personal Gemini accounts. Users without a subscription will receive only Flash-Lite, the smallest option, while the more capable Flash and Pro models move behind paid plans.
The $4.99-per-month AI Plus tier will include Flash-Lite and Flash but not Pro. Customers need AI Pro, priced at $19.99 per month, or an AI Ultra plan to use all three model levels. The change removes access that free users previously had to Gemini 3.6 Flash and, within usage limits, Gemini 3.1 Pro.
Model labels matter because they affect reasoning quality, speed and operating cost, even if many casual users never choose a model manually. The new structure gives Google a clearer way to reserve its most expensive inference for higher-priced subscriptions while keeping a lightweight assistant available without payment.
The Decoder notes that the shift may also prepare the service for Gemini 4 Argon, a larger model that could cost more to run. That connection is an inference rather than a stated reason from Google. The immediate, confirmed consequence is simpler: free and entry-level customers will have fewer model choices, and Pro access now requires at least the AI Pro subscription.
