GitHub has joined a coalition calling for amendments to California’s AI Transparency Act, arguing that parts of the proposal could create problems for open source projects. The company says the law should be narrowed to avoid conflicts with open source licensing while still advancing transparency.
The policy dispute matters because AI regulation increasingly touches model weights, documentation, datasets, and software distribution. Rules written for large proprietary systems can have unintended effects when applied to open collaboration.
GitHub’s position is not a rejection of transparency requirements. It is a push to align them with how open source software is built, shared, and maintained across borders.
