A German court ruled that Google is directly responsible for claims made in its AI Overviews, after the system falsely connected publishers to fraud allegations.
The ruling says the summaries are Google’s own statements rather than neutral indexing of third-party pages, which could narrow liability protections for AI-generated search answers.
If the reasoning spreads, search companies may face stronger pressure to verify AI summaries and provide clearer correction paths.
