Google has brought conversational Gemini navigation to Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, nearly a year after introducing the assistant on Android Auto. The feature is available now to drivers in the United States, with a global rollout underway.

Drivers can tap the Gemini icon on the car display and use natural follow-up questions without restating the whole request. One example is asking for recommendations, choosing a destination from the response and then requesting a route that avoids toll roads. Voice commands can also report traffic disruptions or ask about places along a trip.

Google has not provided a detailed list of countries or dates for the international rollout. The feature also differs from Personal Intelligence on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, which can draw on information from Gmail, Calendar, Photos and other Google services.

There is no confirmation that those personalized data connections are coming to CarPlay. For now, the update is a conversational layer for Google Maps navigation rather than the broader cross-app assistant available in Google’s own automotive integrations.
